I don’t know about you, but I love a good random question that sparks a debate.
Not the heated, win-at-all-costs kind that leaves people frustrated and angry.
I’m talking about the questions that are random enough to discuss with anyone but still require you to make a convincing case.
It’s Thanksgiving, after all (here in the U.S.), so I’m shaking things.
(Don’t worry; we’ll return to business as usual next week)
Here is my all-time favorite random question.
If you could only choose 1 dessert category for the rest of your life — and had to give up all the others — what would it be?
Here are your seven options:
Cakes & cupcakes → chocolate cakes, carrot cake, gourmet cupcakes, etc.
Pies, cobblers & custards → pies, crumbles, crisps, creme brulee, etc.
Cookies & brownies → classic cookies, brownies, blondies, etc.
Pastries → cannolis, danishes, napoleon, tiramisu, etc.
Donuts & fried doughs → glazed, jelly-filled, beingets, etc.
Frozen treats → ice cream, gelato, popsicles, ice cream sandwiches, etc.
Candy & chocolates → chocolate bars, caramels, gummies, nougats, etc.
I like this question for a few reasons.
First, it’s fun to talk about your preferences.
Second, it’s dessert.
Third, the question always (and I mean always) morphs.
Someone always says, “Well, what about…?” which promptly starts a chain reaction of edge cases.
“Wait, is a macaroon a cookie or a pastry?”
“And does cheesecake count as cake or pie?”
“Where does a cinnamon roll fit?”
Before long, it’s a whirlwind of nostalgic treats and spirited (playful) debate.
Random. I know.
And if a good random question isn’t your thing, feel free to unsubscribe — no hard feelings. But I hope you’ll stick around for the usual business insights next week.
By the way, my choice is donuts & fried dough.
Though you could make the case for pastries, too.
Let me know where you land below.

P.S. Last Thanksgiving, I wrote about how you can ditch the small talk at the dinner table. I shared 3 questions to turn surface-level conversations into impactful dialogue.
They will help you uncover some secrets and stories from loved ones and stop the bombardment of boring questions.
